Gold DofE Expeditions
We’re delighted to support schools in delivering the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award here at Bryntysilio. Gold is a significant achievement, and we understand the responsibility and organisation involved for staff. Our aim is to make the expedition process smooth, reliable, and well‑supported, while giving young people a positive and rewarding challenge.
Gold-level expeditions are more demanding, both physically and in terms of independence. We work closely with schools to plan safely, communicate clearly, and provide a structured journey from training through to the qualifying expedition.
Our Gold level expeditions are available as walking, canoeing and biking expeditions, including in mixed-mode.
Whether your group has completed Bronze and Silver or is joining directly at Gold, we offer the guidance, reassurance, and expertise you need.
Advanced training for greater independence
Training for Gold focuses on developing stronger navigation, leadership, and decision‑making skills. Students learn to manage longer routes, more remote areas, and increased responsibility as a team.
Including:
- Advanced navigation and bearings
- Route planning for remote terrain or rivers
- Campcraft and expedition management
- Decision making
- Safety, emergency procedures, and environmental awareness
Our goal is to build confidence gradually, so students feel capable and ready for the challenge ahead.
Expeditions: Building confidence in real conditions
Practice expedition
The Gold practice expedition gives students the chance to experience the longer days and greater independence. Groups spend four days travelling and three nights camping, supported by staff who are close enough to help but far enough to encourage autonomy.
Qualifying expedition: the milestone
The qualifying expedition is a demanding but incredibly rewarding experience. Over four days and three nights, teams navigate remote terrain, manage their own campsite routines, and make independent decisions, while staff supervise from a suitable distance.
Reaching the end of a Gold qualifying expedition is a moment students never forget. It builds confidence, pride, and life skills that stay with them long after school.
We provide equipment
To support both schools and families, we provide high‑quality expedition kit, including:
- Tents
- Stoves and fuel
- Maps and compasses
We also offer genuine guidance on personal kit, ensuring students have safe and suitable equipment without unnecessary cost.
To ease pressure on school staff, we offer weekly in‑school support sessions that can include:
- Navigation practice
- Route planning guidance
- Team development activities
- Kit preparation
- Help with other sections of the Award
Regular sessions help keep students engaged, organised, and ready for the commitment required at Gold
